January 2024
This term Year One have been learning all about ‘By the Sea and Pirates’. They have been looking at the books ‘The Treasure of Pirate Frank’ by Elspeth Graham and Mal Peet and ‘The Pirates Next Door’ by Jonny Duddle to inspire their learning. They have been finding out about what pirates wore as well as what they did on their ships. They were all very excited to meet some ‘real’ pirates at their pirate workshop where they had so much fun! They loved dressing up as pirates and learning how to be a real pirate! They took part in lots of pirate activities including looking through a real telescope, throwing cannonballs at a target and learning some pirate skills such as using a compass and even a cutlass! The children also enjoyed a sail boat race, making the wind to blow their ships along by waving a piece of card behind them. Finding the treasure chest and discovering the hidden jewels inside was an exciting end to a fun-filled day!
This term so far our Reception classes have had an exciting visit from a local vet. They learnt all about how a vet helps animals to get better when they are poorly. How to check their temperature, why vets give injections and how to bandage an animal. The children also got to hold and stroke a guinea pig, as well as learning how to take care of animals at home. The children loved holding the guinea pigs and really enjoyed the whole experience. They also practiced some of the skills they had learnt on toy animals in the classroom. The vet visit was the first of their 'People who help us' learning experiences, they will be visited by members of Sussex Police and also a doctor over the coming weeks.
