Year One - Spring Term 2 2025

Welcome back to Term 4 – Where did that half term break go? This term our learning theme will move from ‘By the Sea’ to ‘Under the Sea’. We have started this theme with the delightful story of ‘Billy’s Bucket’ by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. This is a fun story, where we can learn how to make our writing much more interesting by adding adjectives and verbs to give more detail.

As well as this lovely story, we will also be reading ‘Someone Swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Roberts and ‘The Journey Home’ by Frann Preston-Gannon, using them to look at the problems of plastic and rubbish filling our oceans. We will then be linking this very important subject in geography, where we will be taking a closer look at the different oceans, the wonderful wildlife that live there and how we can help to look after these.

In science, we will be looking at the human body, finding out how we can keep ourselves healthy with a healthy diet, the importance of exercise and keeping our bodies clean. In Maths, we will be looking at focusing on number facts and addition and subtraction within 20. We will also be looking at 3D shape. We would like to say a BIG thank you to all of you who managed to complete your half term family challenge, to create some under the sea creatures from recycled materials. We have been blown away at how much effort you have put into making such fantastic creatures. We hope you enjoyed making them together. The children have really enjoyed being able to talk about them and use them to inspire their writing.

In PE, we will be continuing to further our ball skills, in particular ‘invasion games’. As you know we introduced ‘spellings’ this term which has been extremely successful. The children have really enjoyed the challenge and we have noticed this positively impact their writing. Thank you for all the support you have given to helping your children. Please continue to help them practise these as this REALLY does make a huge difference to their development as well as their confidence.

Thank you as always for your ongoing support.
